TNPSC General English – PART A

New Updated Material 2020

7. Select the correct Question Tags

Question Tags:

Question tags are short questions at the end of Statements.

They are mainly used in speech when we want to:

·       Confirm that something is true or not, or

·       To encourage a reply from the person we are speaking to.

Question Tags are formed with the auxiliary or modal verb from the statement and the appropriate subject.

 Examples:

You have a pen, don’t you?

(If you thought the person did not have a pen, but you weren’t sure and wanted to confirm it, you would ask,)

You don’t have a pen, do you?

Note the first part of your question is a statement followed by Question tags.
·       If the statement is Affirmative (Positive), the tag will be negative.

·       If the statement is negative, the tag will be Affirmative (Positive).

 Examples:

Children like ice cream, don’t they?

(The statement is positive, so the tag is negative)

Children don’t like sitting idle, do they?

(The statement is negative, so the tag is positive)

Tags always begin after a comma, with a small letter and end with a question mark.
Tag always end with a pronoun, representing the subject in the main sentences.

Examples:

We can’t live without water, can we?

You will come in time, won’t you?

How to frame proper Question tag

  • Use the helping verb if one is available in the sentence.
  • Introduce do, does and use it in the question tag.
  • For ‘be’ sentences use the ‘be group’ verbs as they are.
  • The only exemption to the last rule is ‘am’. It has a different tag in the positive sentences.
      • Example:

              I am your teacher, aren’t I / ain’t I?

I am not your enemy, am I?

  • The question tags for imperative sentences are different. They reflect the mood of the speaker.
      • Example:

              Stop crying, will you?

              Work fast, can’t you?

  • When the verb in the main sentences is in the Present simple we form the question tag with do/does.
      • Examples:

You play the guitar, don’t you?

Sherin likes tennis, doesn’t she?

  • If the verb in the simple past, we use did
      • Example:

They went to cinema, didn’t they?

  • When the sentence contain a word with a negative meaning, the question tag needs to be positive.
      • Examples:

They rarely eat in the restaurants, does they?

She hardly ever speaks. Does she?

  • Exceptions:

    • Let’s – let’s go to the beach, shall we?
    • Have got (possession) – He has got a car, hasn’t he?
    • This/ that – This is Arun’s pen, isn’t it?
    • There are/is – They aren’t any cockroach in the bedroom, are there?
    • Positive imperative – Stop daydreaming, will/wont you?
    • Negative imperative – Don’t stop singing, shall we?
    • I am – I am attractive, aren’t I?
  • Intonation

    • When we are sure of the answer and we are simply encouraging a response, the intonation in the question tag goes down:
      • This is your car, isn’t it?

(Your voice goes down when you say isn’t it.)

  • When we are not sure of the answer and want to check information, the intonation in the question tag goes up:
      • He is from France, isn’t he?

(Your voice goes up when you say isn’t he.)
