Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU)
- CITU stands for Centre of Indian Trade Unions. It is one of the major Central Trade Unions (CTU) in India. It is politically affiliated to Communist Party of India as its trade union wing.
- CITU believes in socialism and works with the belief that exploitation of the working class can be stopped by socializing all means of production (distribution and exchange) and by establishing a socialist state. So, its main aim is to fight against all encroachments on the economic and social rights of the workers and works for the enlargement of their rights and liberties.
- The CITU consists of the following departments; Affiliated Unions, General Council, Working Committee or the General Council, The State Conference, the State Committees, and State Councils, The delegates gathered at the special session of the CITU Conference.
The General Session of CITU is held once in every three years. It is known as CITU Conference and is the highest organ of authority in CITU. Some of its functions or powers are given below:
- Adopting the policies of CITU and making necessary changes in them in the interests of the working class
- Considers the questions of state committees and constituent unions and pass resolutions on questions for the betterment of working class
- Takes decisions related to affiliations and disaffiliation of unions
- Conducts election of the general council and office bearers
- Can modify or amend the present constitution if needed
- Checks and passes the audited Statement of Accounts and takes decisions in accordance with the constitution of the CITU.
