1. The three Indian journalists win Pulitzer Prize 2020 in feature photography.
Information in News
- The names of the three prize winners are Associated Press photographers Dar Yasin, Mukhtar Khan and Channi Anand (feature photography Award for Kashmir coverage).
- The Breaking news photography award won by the photography staff of Reuters for documenting last year’s violent protests in Hong Kong.
Putlizer Prizes
- The Pulitzer Prizes in journalism were first awarded in 1917 .
- It is considered the field’s most prestigious honor in the U.S.
- The Pulitzer Prize is an award for achievements in newspaper, magazine and online journalism, literature, and musical composition in the United States.
- It was established in 1917 by provisions in the will of Joseph Pulitzer, who had made his fortune as a newspaper publisher, and is administered by Columbia University.
- Prizes are awarded yearly in twenty-one categories.
- In twenty of the categories, each winner receives a certificate and a US$15,000 cash award (raised from $10,000 in 2017).
- The winner in the public service category is awarded a gold medal.
- Obverse and reverse sides of the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service gold medal, designed by Daniel Chester French in 1917.
2. Eviction not under Article 32 says, SC
Information in News
- The evictions were violative of a Ministry of Home Affairs order on March 29 that landlords should not collect rent or evict students and labourers for a month.
- The Supreme Court clarified that they are not inclined to entertain this petition under Article 32 of the Constitution.
- The writ petition is accordingly dismissed.
Article 32 of Indian Constitution
Article 32 is often termed as the “Soul of the Constitution” because it gives people the right to move Supreme Court ‘directly’ in case of violation of their fundamental rights, they may not necessarily approach high court or any other court for that purpose.

3. Darbar Move – Burdens the Exchequer
Information in News
- The Jammu and Kashmir High Court asked the Centre and the Union Territory (UT) administration to take a final call on the continuation of the 148-year-old practice of shifting capitals annually between Srinagar and Jammu.
- The practice was introduced in 1872 by a Dogra monarch to escape the harsh winters of the Kashmir Valley.
Critics on Darbar Move
The Court Observed,
- Darbar move burdens the exchequer.
- If this practice was rationalised, the amount of money, resources and time which could be saved, could be utilised towards the development of the Union Territory.
- This move results in wastage of tremendous amount of time, efforts and energy on inefficient and unnecessary activity (packing of records).
- It is taxing for security forces too.

- The continuation of the practice to help in the emotional integration between two diverse regions of J&K.
The Darbar Move
- Introduced by Dogra monarch Maharaja Gulab Singh in
- The Darbar Move would see shifting of the Civil Secretariat in summers from Jammu to Srinagar and in winters from Srinagar to Jammu.
- In January 1987, the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had asked the then Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah to stop the practice.
- However, the Darbar Move was continued to allow it to act as a bridge between two diverse cultures of the Kashmir Valley and the Jammu region.
4. China Successfully launched a new rocker Long march 5B
Information in News
- It is a major test of the country’s ambitions to operate a permanent space station and send astronauts to the Moon.
- The launch had “strengthened confidence and determination” for the next stages of China’s space programme.
- The United States is so far the only country to have successfully sent humans to the Moon.
- The new spaceship will give China an advantage in the area of human spaceflight over Japan and Europe.
The Long March 5B’ rocket
- This took off from the Wenchang launch site in the southern island of Hainan and eight minutes later an unmanned prototype spaceship successfully separated and entered its planned orbit.
- A test version of a cargo return capsule also separated from the rocket.
- It will have capacity for a crew of six.
- The successful maiden flight of the 54-metre Long March 5B — which has a take-off mass of about 849 tonnes.
- Assembly of the Tiangong space station is expected to begin this year and finish in 2022.
- China plans to send an astronaut to the Moon in about a decade and then build a base there.
- The spaceship will one day transport astronauts to a space station that China plans to complete by 2022 and eventually to the Moon.
- It is strengthened confidence and determination for the next stages of China’s space programme.
5. Iran approves plan to cut four zeros from falling currency
Information in News
- Iran’s parliament has passed a bill allowing the government to slash four zeros from the rial.
- This action taken after a sharp fall in the value of the currency as a result of crippling U.S. sanctions.
- Iran’s national currency will be changed from the rial to the Toman, which is equal to 10,000 rials.
Background Information
- The idea of removing four zeros has been floated since 2008,
- But gained strength after 2018, when U.S. President Donald Trump exited Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions, as the rial lost more than 60% of its value.
- The Iranian currency was trading at about 156,000 rials per dollar on the unofficial market , according to foreign exchange websites.
- Iran’s weak currency and high inflation have led to sporadic street protests since late 2017.
