President of India List from 1950 to 2023
- The president of India is the head of state of India and the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces.
- The president is referred to as the first citizen of India.
- The Vice-President of India is the second-highest constitutional office in India, after the President.
- Although vested with these powers by the Constitution of India, the position is largely a ceremonial one and executive powers are de facto exercised by the prime minister.
- The president is elected by the Electoral College composed of elected members of the parliament houses, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, and also members of the Vidhan Sabha, the state legislative assemblies.
- Presidents may remain in office for a tenure of five years.
- In the case where a president’s term of office is terminated early or during the absence of the president, the vice president assumes office.
- There have been 15 presidents of India since the post was established when India was declared as a republic with the adoption of the Indian constitution in 1950.
- Apart from these fourteen, three acting presidents (Varahagiri Venkata Giri, Muhammad Hidayatullah, and Basappa Danappa Jatti,) have also been in office for short periods of time.
- Varahagiri Venkata Giri became the acting president in 1969 after Zakir Husain, died in office.
- Rajendra Prasad, the first president of India in 1947, is the only person to have held office for two terms.
- Two presidents, Zakir Hussain and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, have died in office.
- Pratibha Patil, who was in office till 25 July 2012, was elected as the 12th President of India in 2007. She is also the first woman to serve as President of India.
- The Former President is Pranab Mukherjee elected on 25 July 2012.
- Mukherjee held various posts in the cabinet ministry for the Government of India such as Finance Minister, Foreign Minister, Defence Minister and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. He originally comes from West Bengal and is also the first Bengali to hold the post of the President.
- The 14th President was Ram Nath Kovind was born on 1 October 1945, in Paraunkh village in the Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh.
- The current President 15th is Droupadi Murmu, has become the new president of India after the announcement of the result of the presidential elections on 21st July 2022.
- Droupadi Murmu is the 2nd women President of India and the first tribal woman President of India. Droupadi Murmu is the 15th President of India, after Shri Ram Nath Kovind.

Presidents of India:
Eligibility:
The Indian Constitution’s Article 58 states a few conditions for a candidate to be eligible for the election of the president. Some of the following have been given below:
- The President should be a citizen of India.
- The President must be above the age of 35 years.
- The President should be qualified for election as a member of the Lok Sabha.
- The President of India should not contain any office of profit under the State Government, Union, and other local authorities.
Election Method:
He is the constitutional head of the parliamentary system of the government. He is also the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces. He represents the nation but does not rule it. The real power vests with the council of ministers.
President is elected by the electoral college of
(i) elected members of both houses of the Parliament
(ii) elected members of state legislatures
(iii) elected members of the legislative assemblies of the Delhi and Puducherry (added by 70th amendment Act, 1992).
Elected for five years but eligible for immediate re-election and can serve any number of terms.
The President can be removed from the post in case it is found that there is any violation of the constitution by the president. This impeachment can be moved in either house of parliament.
The Vice President acts as President in the absence of the president due to death, resignation, impeachment, or other situations if the Vice President’s seat is vacant then the Chief Justice of India acts as the President of India.
